Guns of Fury from Gelato Games brings us a retro-inspired action platformer mixing the run and gun and Metroidvania genres on Nintendo Switch. This indie studio previously gave us the 2D budget action platformer Goblin Sword on Nintendo’s console and is now back with a more ambitious release. Guns of Fury will take place in the near future in a world that has been facing a major energy crisis since 2042. It’s then that the world-famous scientist Dr. Klaus announces the discovery of the Tetra Cell, which has extremely high energy-producing properties, thus offering a glimpse of hope for humanity. Unfortunately, 24 hours after such a huge announcement, Dr. Klaus mysteriously disappears… and his lab is destroyed in an explosion!
All signs point to industrialist A. Easton, President of Easton Industries, as the one who has taken Dr. Klaus and the Tetra Cell. His intention? To create a superweapon! Because of all this, you’re now ready to jump into action. Your name is Vincent Fury, and you’re a special operative sent on a mission to infiltrate the top-secret research facility of Easton Industries. You’ll have to do whatever it takes to rescue Dr. Klaus and recover the Tetra Cell before A. Easton can manage to create the weapon he so desperately desires. Before you can defeat him, you’ll have to obtain new skills and equipment to search every area of the facility. But first, you’ll have to find a way to escape your cell! That’s right, after finding A. Easton and fighting against a huge mech, you’ll be captured by Easton Industries and stripped of all your weapons and equipment.
As for the gameplay, think Metal Slug meets Metroid, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from Guns of Fury. You’ll take control of Vincent Fury by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the B button, and using the X button for your melee weapon. Your primary weapon is mapped to the Y button, and your secondary weapon will be set to the A button. Abilities will be mapped to the R, ZL, and ZR buttons. And since this one has a Metroidvania side, you will have to check your map with the – button to see where you are and where you should go next. While your main weapon has unlimited ammo, your secondary weapon will have limited ammo based on the green gauge below your health bar.
Your progress will be slowed down a bit by the different obstacles that need to be removed or overcome with the different equipment and skills that you’ll obtain as you defeat bosses and find special chests. Take, for example, the grenade. Along with dealing a good chunk of damage to enemies and bosses, it can also be used to destroy rock walls or structures blocking your path. Find some kneepads to press forward on the left analog stick or the D-Pad while holding down so that you can crawl. Press the B button while crouching so that you can slide. This will allow you to get through some tighter spaces.
As you defeat enemies and destroy objects, you’ll get to collect items that will increase your overall gold. These include bronze coins, gold coins, money stacks, small money bags, regular money bags, emeralds, diamonds, and more. As expected, the more luxurious a treasure, the more gold it will be worth. Bronze coins are worth 5, while gold coins are worth a more respectable 10. A money stack is a nice one since it’s worth 30, but it’s nowhere near the value of a diamond, which will add 200 gold to your total. You can use gold to purchase healing items as well as new weapons and even badges that can boost some of your stats. Grab yourself a bomb badge to increase the damage of bombs by 10!
Along with buying items that can be quite useful for your mission with your hard-earned gold, you can also collect some of these items along the way. Eating an apple away will keep the doctor away and help you recover 17 HP. Use ointment to heal the burn status ailment while also healing 10 HP. Use an ammo reserve to refill a small amount of your ammo gauge. Eat a juicy burger to recover 20 HP.
You should also search everywhere to locate the ammo and health expansions that will boost your max values for said stats. Just don’t worry when you grab one or the other and don’t immediately see the health or ammo gauges increase in size. While they’ll remain the same size, their values will increase, so you’ll be able to use your alternate weapon more and take more damage. Oh, and you can also find a bomb ammo expansion so that you can increase the number of uses for those types of weapons.
