PS Plus Users Bemoan Sony’s ‘Unfair’ Discount Policy


PS Plus users have criticized Sony’s policy of limiting discount offers to new members or those whose memberships have expired. For quite some time now, those whose subscriptions are active at the time a discount is live are unable to avail the offer for a renewal. The latest PS Plus sale is no different.

PS Plus discount policy deemed ‘unfair’

We recently reported that some PS Plus users were dreading Sony’s five-day extension offer as compensation for February’s massive PSN outage. The reason behind that is precisely Sony’s policy of not allowing renewals to be eligible for a discount.

You see, PS Plus gets a hefty discount during Black Friday sales period. Those whose subscriptions will run out after that period owing to the five-day extension will be locked out of 2025’s annual discount. It’s pretty silly, to say the least, and we do agree that it’s a tad “unfair.”

“PlayStation is telling me I can’t take advantage of the 35% off 12-month Premium sale because I was already a subscriber,” a player complained on Reddit, referring to the ongoing sale. “This seems completely unfair.” “Wild that they offer absolutely nothing for loyalty,” wrote another. Some said that they tried contacting PS Support, but to no avail.

It’s not uncommon for companies to focus on attracting new and returning customers, so we don’t blame Sony for this. However, we’re not sure how anyone’s benefitting from this policy since players are now resorting to simply canceling their memberships to avail discounts rather than renewing.

It would make more sense to offer a separate incentive to renew memberships rather than ignore this segment of the market completely.
