PS5 System Update Beta for February 2025 Out Now

Sony has begun rolling out a new PS5 system software update in beta phase via email invites that recipients can share with up to four friends. We’re not quite sure why the firmware update is being rolled out this way as it seems to be relatively minor, going by the patch notes. That said, it looks like Sony’s being quite generous with the codes, so check your email.

PS5 system software update beta patch notes (February 20, 2025)

Patch notes, as relayed by recipients of the invites, are as follows:

  • We’ve made it simpler to view details about activities.
    • Activity details are now fully displayed on cards. Potential spoilers will still be hidden.
  • Unicode 16.0 emojis are now supported. You can use them in your messages.
  • When you set the parental controls’ restriction level to Late Teens or Older, Communication and User-Generated Content will now default to Restrict. If you have previously set the level to Late Teens or Older, your previous settings will not be affected and it will be shown as Customize.
  • We’ve improved system software performance and stability.
  • We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.

A little more than good ol’ stability updates, then, but nothing major.

No further details about the update are available on PlayStation.com at the time of this writing.
