Circana’s Mat Piscatella has revealed that the PS5 was January 2025’s best-selling hardware platform in the US in terms of units and dollar, with Xbox Series X/S following in second place for hardware spending. However, Nintendo Switch managed second place to PS5 based on units sold.
January consumer spending on Accessories fell 28% vs YA, to $194M, and finished slightly ahead of January 2023’s $192M. PlayStation Portal was again the month’s best-selling accessory in consumer spending, while the Dual Sense Wireless Controller Midnight Black led in units sold.

Earlier this month Sony announced that the PS5 had shipped 75 million units worldwide, with the format holder shifting 9.5 million units during the three-month period ended December 31, 2024, giving the console its best quarter since its launch in November 2020.
Sony released the PS5 during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, during a time where many regions were observing lockdown to curb the spread of the virus. While stock sold out quickly, resupplies were few and far between due to a shortage of manufacturing components, and the situation wasn’t helped by scalpers taking advantage of low stock supplies by reselling PS5s at exorbitant prices.
