Machine learning-based upscaling seems to be the future for video game graphics moving forward. Technologies like PS5 Pro’s PSSR allow games to run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second without sacrificing performance. There are always exceptions, but it is impressive to see what companies are doing with the technology including AMD’s latest iteration of its AI upscaler, FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4). PS5 architect Mark Cerny confirmed it is targeting an update to PSSR in 2026 that will implement changes similar to FSR 4.
“FSR 4 and this next evolution of PSSR are a paradigm for our future,” says PS5 Pro architect Mark Cerny
To put a bit of perspective on this, FSR 4 is the recently released ML upscaling tech exclusively for AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards. It has been lauded for its vast improvements to FSR 3, putting it on par with NVIDIA’s DLSS tech at a lower cost. To really see how it has improved and how it compares to DLSS, check out this video from tech experts Digital Foundry. They break it down very well.
However, to put it simply, Sony is planning to implement a similar update to its ML tech PSSR to put it on par with FSR 4. Cerny confirmed in a recent interview with Digital Foundry it plans to roll it out in 2026.
“Our focus for 2025 is working with developers to integrate PSSR into their titles; in parallel, though, we have already started to implement the new neural network on PS5 Pro,” says Cerny. “Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR; it should take the same inputs and produce essentially the same outputs. Doing that implementation is rather ambitious and time consuming, which is why you haven’t already seen this new upscaler on PS5 Pro.”
This will be a welcome improvement for PS5 Pro users. Although PSSR has worked generally well, some games have seen issues such as shimmering in certain PS5 titles.
