AMD has celebrated the release of FSR4 in a post on X, specifically thanking Sony Interactive Entertainment for their contribution to the technology as part of its previously-announced Project Amethyst. FSR4 itself was trained using the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) algorithms.

Project Amethyst was announced back in December 2024 and will see AMD and Sony working together to develop hardware architectures to work for both lightweight and high-quality CNNS for real-time graphics. This technology is expected to define the basic hardware of the PS6.
While we’re on the subject of the PS6, ex-Sony indie boss Shuhei Yoshida recently commented in an interview that it feels right’ if the console were to launch in 2028. Furthermore, Shawn Layden, the former chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, doesn’t think Sony’s next-generation console will be completely discless.
