Critical Role Might be Announcing a Video Game Soon

Key Takeaways

  • Critical Role is hinting at a big video game announcement coming by early 2025.
  • It’s unclear whether the group is working on its own game, or opening a video game production studio.
  • The web series will celebrate its 10th anniversary in March 2025.

Critical Role may be working on a video game of some sort, and is seemingly announcing “something exciting” pertaining to the subject soon. Few details about the critically-acclaimed Dungeons and Dragons web series’ foray into the video gaming industry are available just yet, but hints in a recent interview have revealed that it hopes to make a big announcement before the end of the year, if not early 2025, for the stream’s 10th anniversary.

Among Dungeons and Dragons streams, Critical Role is one of the most popular and long-running. Since its humble beginnings in 2015, Critical Role has transformed into a multimedia enterprise comprised of branches that include animation production company Metapigeon, tabletop game publisher Darrington Press, and the Beacon subscription streaming service.

Now, it seems like Critical Role is also planning on entering the video game industry as well. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Critical Role CEO, cast member, and voice actor Travis Willingham confirmed that the group has been working on getting into video games for a while. “We are starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years,” he said, “And hopefully, we’ll have something really exciting to share, maybe around the end of the year, maybe at the beginning of 2025, just in time for our 10-year anniversary.”

Critical Role Teases a Big Announcement by Early 2025

Willingham went on to say its recent collaborations with other games, such as the Critical Role x Among Us crossover, the Pillars of Eternity 2 DLC, and Exandrian characters in Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, were “little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels.” He also recognized that, between rampant layoffs and the controversies involving generative AI in gaming, there was “a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now,” so Critical Role is “trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem.”

Right now, fans can only speculate as to what announcement Critical Role is planning. It could announce a video game production studio, like how it did with Critical Role’s Darrington Press or Metapigeon, though it could already be working on an actual video game of some kind as well. From a Baldur’s Gate 3-style RPG or a Soulslike hack-and-slash to an MMO set in Exandria or even a dating simulator featuring the main cast of Critical Role, there are a lot of directions such a project could go.

The first episode of Critical Role aired on March 12, 2015, so at the very latest, fans can probably expect to learn what this “really exciting” announcement is before its 10th anniversary next year. The Game Awards also take place on December 12, and while unlikely, it is possible Critical Role might announce something there, as the ceremony has historically been used for many video game reveals in the past. Either way, the Critter community is over the twin moons of Exandria with excitement, and cannot wait to see what the Critical Role cast has in store for them.
