Live Service Games Made Up Over 40% Of Total Play Time On PS5 & Xbox Series X/S In US Last Month

Circana’s Mat Piscatella has revealed that over 40% of the total time spent playing games on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in the US last month was attributed to live service titles.

Speaking on BlueSky, Piscatella revealed that over 70% of active users on Sony and Microsoft’s current-generation consoles in the US played at least one of the top 10 live service titles in January. While it’s possible that some users may have sampled the game and moved on, the 10 live service titles were so popular they managed to account for a combined 40%-plus of all time spent on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S last month.

Piscatella observed that these figures may be of concern to developers of other titles, as the total US video game market spending, total players and total hours saw a peak in 2021, and “the pace of games being released hasn’t slowed.”

The player pool is therefore not expanding, and if a large majority of people spend their time on the same 10 live service titles it reduces the time spent on other games, including new releases.

A lot is riding on the new products coming to market this year to hopefully combat or reverse some of these trends. Used to be that players would jump from big game to big game to some other games but they were most often to moving to something new. That they purchased. Now, the live service games suck out a ton of available time, and it’s hard to beat free if it’s good. So. Here we are.
