Desvelado from Purple Play and Vampi Team is a hand-drawn 2D platformer in which you’ll have to take on a very important mission: turning all lights off so that you can finally sleep. You’ll be taking on the role of Vampy, who, as his name suggests, is a vampire. He was at a bar about to bite into a juicy neck when the alarm on his watch went off. This means he must go back to the castle to sleep. Unfortunately, the ghosts have played a prank on him and have lit up every single lamp in the castle!
The studios describes this one as a Bed-Time-Vania since you’ll be exploring 5 main zones split into more than 100 rooms to solve. You’ll be exploring the castle, the dungeon, as well as the catacombs. As you run, jump, and slide your way to eternal sleep, you’ll have to work on some puzzles here and there. Not all rooms are mandatory, so you’ll run into ones that ramp up the challenge to test your skills.
You’ll be taking control of Vampy with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the B button as you aim to turn off each light that you run into. Did you make a mistake? Then, you can press the X button to send Vampy back to the start of that room. Grab a blood candle to gain a dash, which you can use by pressing the Y button. You can dash in any direction, and this will be needed to complete many of the rooms you’ll take on.
You won’t be able to progress to the next room until all light sources are gone, and you’ll have to avoid hazards along the way to remain undeadly healthy! Spikes are a classic one, and their sharp edges are very bad for you. The aforementioned dashes are not cumulative, so you’ll have to pay attention to what order is needed for turning a light off and collecting a blood candle to then use a dash to clear a gap that you must jump over to reach that room’s exit.
Once you find your first map piece, you can press the – button to open up your map and select a new area to explore. You’ll then have to reach the end of the new area to find a new map piece that will open the path to a new area. Rinse and repeat until you’ve turned off all lights so that Vampy can finally go to sleep! Sometimes, you’ll only end up with half a map piece, so you’ll need to search for the second half in another area.
Along with the rooms that are part of the main experience, you can also explore the bonus rooms that Desvelado has to offer. You’ll know that you’re in one of those because the game will instantly show the word “BONUS!” on the screen. These are not part of your main quest, but they can be completed to collect the different parts of your friend Bonnie’s skeleton, which has been broken into pieces.
After lighting up all the candles in the castle, the ghosts are not going to stand still while you work on extinguishing all of them. Ghosts will start to show up in rooms, forcing you to pay attention to their movement patterns to find the right sequence needed to extinguish all candles before they end up lighting them up again. At first, you’ll only find ghosts that can’t harm you, but you’ll soon run into some spiky ghosts that will make you pop if you touch them! Just be sure to extinguish all candles in a room as quickly as possible to make the ghosts disappear so that they don’t end up annoying you as much.
