Morkull Ragast’s Rage from Selecta Play, Astrolabe Games, and Disaster Games is a 2D hand-drawn Metroidvania that places you in the role of the villain. On top of that, the titular character is very much aware of how he’s a character in a video game, that you’re the one controlling him, and that he was created by the game’s developers. You know, the usual. Your task will be to help Morkull escape from the Ragast so that he can fulfill his destiny of ruling the world. He is, after all, the God of Death and Darkness! This one pays homage to classic entries in the genre while also giving some nods to more recent releases, such as Hollow Knight.
You’ll take control of Morkull by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the B button, and interacting with other characters or objects by pressing the A button. Basic attacks will be mapped to the Y button, while heavy attacks will be mapped to the X button. You can use a bone shield to protect yourself from incoming attacks by pressing the R button. It can also be used to deflect projectiles back toward enemies if you time it just right.
If you need to heal your wounds, you can use a potion by pressing the L button. Pressing the ZR button will allow you to dash, which you can use to avoid attacks or to clear longer gaps that your regular jump can’t take care of. You can use the right analog stick to look up or down as needed. Be sure to do this before making a dangerous jump… or else! And since this one is a Metroidvania, you should keep an eye on your map, which you can check by pressing the – button.
As you defeat enemies, you’ll collect Anima. You can exchange Anima st save points to purchase or boost abilities. You can unlock additional combos that will make combat a lot easier or add the mighty Power of Friendship to your set of abilities. That one was added by a programmer who liked Morkull. It will add a passive effect that will activate when health is below 15%, making him invincible for a short period of time! You could also activate the enemy UI so you can see how much health they have left, add an extra potion use, and more.
You’ll eventually add new skills to your repertoire that will allow you to explore additional areas. These will consume some of the purple bar below your health. One such example is the Noob Crusher, which you will use by pressing the down direction on the left analog stick and the D-Pad and the Y and X buttons at the same time. This skill will allow you to break through some floors and will be your ticket to reach the first boss fight.

The map does a terrible job of showing you where you really are, usually misplacing the marker while exploring larger rooms. It also doesn’t show spots where you can obviously use new skills to open new paths or collect additional skills, which is definitely not how you do maps for a Metroidvani. Controls are stiff and unresponsive. Enemies are cheap and not as varied as expected, and combat is dull and repetitive. Level design is obnoxious, with too many switches that open barriers and keys that open doors. There are also bugs in the game’s graphics that make seams on the floor flicker, as well as invisible barriers that pop out of nowhere, keeping your character frozen in place until you dash to break the glitch. Morkull Ragast’s Rage is out today on Nintendo Switch with a $17.99 price tag.
