Overwatch 2’s 6v6 Mode Will “Probably” Return For Good

Summary

  • Overwatch 2 will “probably” always have a 6v6 mode going forward.
  • This comes after experiments with 6v6 have proven popular.
  • The next step is a temporary trial of 6v6 in competitive mode.

The most significant change introduced with Overwatch 2 was the shift from 6v6 to 5v5. This proved to be incredibly divisive, with many calling for the old team sizes to return. 6v6 modes were then rolled out on a temporary basis and seem to have been a success, as there are now plans to take this further.

Speaking in a new blog post, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addresses the future of 6v6, saying that it will “probably” become a permanent fixture in the game in some form or another. However, he adds that the team is “not ready” to replace 5v5 with 6v6 just yet, so it will be relegated to secondary game modes.

6v6 Is Here To Stay In Overwatch 2, Coming To Competitive Mode

But 5v5 isn’t going anywhere either

In the blog post, Keller reflects on the success of the recent 6v6 trials and announces that 6v6 is coming to competitive.

“There’s definitely a demand for a mode with this team size, but it’s still uncertain how large that demand is,” he says. “We’re going to run a mini-competitive season of 6v6 starting midseason 15. It’s still a little early to say what 6v6’s place is in Overwatch with a decent amount of people playing it, I think that it’s probably here to stay in some form, but so far, we’re not ready to swap the core format of the game.”

Judging by the replies, fans are very happy to see 6v6 being rolled out into competitive, even if it isn’t the main mode and only temporarily. At the very least, it’s now likely that there will always be at least one 6v6 mode to hop on if you’re not feeling 5v5.

The blog post also doesn’t rule out completely replacing 5v5 as the main mode in Overwatch 2. So, while some are frustrated that this hasn’t happened yet, it’s very possible that we’ll go back to original Overwatch team sizes in the future, at least if these experiments continue to prove popular.
