Outriders and Gears of War Judgment studio People Can Fly is creating a new game based on an unknown PlayStation franchise.
The Poland-headquartered studio announced the news on Friday, confirming that it’s entered into a work-for-hire agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment to create a prototype based on one of its IPs. No further details were shared.
People Can Fly also has a project in development with Microsoft, which it announced via a similar regulatory filing in 2023.
The studio, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022 and was owned by Epic Games from 2012-2015, also developed Bulletstorm, the PC port of the original Gears of War, and has worked on Fortnite.
Last April, People Can Fly announced that it had cancelled a co-op action RPG codenamed Project Dagger after it was dropped by original publisher Take-Two Interactive in 2022. A few months earlier, it reportedly laid off over 30 developers working on an unannounced Square Enix game.
PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst recently said Sony is open to reviving its back catalogue of classic game franchises.
Speaking to Famitsu, the exec said that going forward, the platform holder intends to offer a broad range of experiences from both its first-party studios, and by working with external developers.
“The various IPs that we own are an important asset to PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we are continually looking at opportunities to leverage past IP, as well as develop new franchises,”he said.
“Our goal is to publish games by the world’s best creators, both inside and outside of PlayStation, and we have achieved many successes so far by working closely with external development studios.”
Implicit Conversions, a developer responsible for many of the PlayStation Classics ports on PS5, has said it’s researching the possibility of bringing PS3 games to modern platforms.
While the majority of PS5’s PlayStation Classics games are available to download and play via emulation, currently PS3 games are only playable via cloud streaming.
