ReFantazio Manga Confirms Protagonist’s Canon Name

Summary

  • Persona fans regularly get into argument over the names of each protagonist, with the games and manga often using different names for the same character.
  • Thankfully, Metaphor: ReFantazio fans won’t be getting into any fights, as the first chapter of the game’s manga also refers to the main character as Will.

Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona developer Atlus has a particularly strange formula when it comes to designing protagonists for their games. They almost always have a pre-designed main character, not allowing you to build or customize them in any way, but they also allow you to name them whatever you like, allowing you a small degree of customization.

The year his wrapped up, but I still need to put a bow on these games.

It’s this fact that has made actually getting the canon names of these characters rather complex. Persona games in particular are notorious for creating confusion around a character’s name, with Atlus using one name in a game, while referring to them as another in a manga. For example, Joker from Persona 5 is known as Ren Amamiya in the game, but Akira Kurusu in the manga.

It’s the same with the other Persona manga too, with Persona 3’s main character (Makoto Yuki) referred to as Minato Arisato, and Persona 4’s main character (Yu Narukami) referred to as Souji Seta in their respective manga. Thankfully, it seems as though Metaphor: ReFantazio’s manga is bucking that trend, as both game and manga are in agreement.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Main Character Name Has Been Confirmed

Sorry John Metaphor Believers

In the first chapter of the Metaphor: ReFantazio manga, our main character makes his introductions to several members of the game’s cast, even though the events of the manga are wildly different to the game. During one particular panel, which was shared by Reddit user JinMQ on the game’s subreddit earlier today, he introduces himself to Strohl as Will, which is also his default name in the game itself.

That means we’ll be having no Ren/Akira or Makoto/Minato fandom wars with Metaphor. It is a little strange that the two are in agreement this time, considering the main characters have been named something different almost every time. It could be down to the game’s theme, as ‘Will’ can mean several things, but I won’t dive further into that to avoid spoiling story beats.

Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of Will in the future too. We have only one game right now, but game director Katsura Hashino claimed in a recent interview that he would love the game to “become a series one day”. Given how critically acclaimed Metaphor has been for Atlus, it would surely be foolish not to grant Hashino his wish.
