Sonic X Shadow Generation’s Launch Was Bigger Than The Original’s

Summary

  • Sonic X Shadow Generations has sold over two million copies worldwide, outpacing the original Sonic Generations.
  • The original Sonic Generations sold 1.85 million as of March 2012.
  • This is yet another success for the Year of Shadow, which also saw the premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theatres.

Sonic X Shadow Generations has sold two million copies in three months across all platforms. This puts it ahead of how much the original Sonic Generations sold in a similar timeframe, as it managed to shift around 1.85 million copies as of March 2012.

This success comes alongside Sonic the Hedgehog 3 surpassing its predecessor as the highest-grossing Sonic movie. With that in mind, it’s safe to say that the Year of Shadow was a hit, and putting the fan-favourite anti-hero front and centre has given the series a huge boost.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Outpaces The Original Sonic Generations

Sega just announced the updated sales figures for Sonic X Shadow Generations, saying that worldwide sales have now surpassed the two million mark. It hasn’t updated the original game’s sales figures since 2012, so we can’t tell if it’s completely outsold its predecessor, but we do now know that it’s selling faster than it did at launch.

This isn’t overly surprising. Not only is Sonic X Shadow Generations a remaster of an already beloved Sonic game, it also gave us our first Shadow spin-off since 2005. Who knows? Maybe this will give Sega the push it needs to greenlight a full Shadow game, after years of leaving him on the bench.

To delve into slight spoilers for Sonic 3, we can expect Shadow to appear in the next film. A post-credits scene confirmed that he survived the events of Sonic 3, leaving him open to be in more stories going forward. That won’t be until 2027 though, so we’re in for a bit of wait. With that said, the gap between the last two films was filled with a Knuckles spin-off show. And with plenty of fans eager for more Shadow… well. Paramount certainly has options.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
