Spores Are Back In HBO’s The Last Of Us, And Neil Druckmann Says There’s A “Dramatic Reason” For Their Return

HBO’s The Last Of Us followed the original game pretty closely, so close in fact that it was one of the few things you could criticize the first season for. But on the whole it made plenty of changes, like the removal of spores from this version of the world, replaced instead with tendrils.

But as we saw in the latest trailer for season two of the show, the spores are back, for some reason. According to Neil Druckmann, there’s a “dramatic reason” for their return, which we’ll presumably discover in one of the episodes in season two after it premieres on April 13, 2025.

During the show’s panel at SXSW 2025, Druckmann along with showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed that spores are back, and there is a reason for it.

“The reason, I mean, we really wanted to figure it out, and again, everything has to be drama. There had to be a dramatic reason of introducing it now. And there is.”
