Square Enix Dev Gives Update on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Progress

Summary

  • The development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is progressing well, with the project not yet encountering any significant setbacks.
  • While the game is still without a concrete release window, Square Enix’s track record suggests that the final entry in the FF7 remake trilogy could hit the market as early as 2027.

Square Enix is satisfied with the progress of the third game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, a senior company official has said. This remark was shared as a part of a recent update on the current status of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sequel.

Pre-production work on the final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy began circa June 2022. The project entered full production shortly after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released in February 2024. Square Enix has been providing sporadic updates on the status of the upcoming AAA RPG ever since.

Rumor: Final Fantasy 7 Remake May Be Coming to Switch 2

A well-known industry insider claims that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will launch for the Nintendo Switch 2—and won’t be the only FF game to do so.

Continuing this trend, Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase and game director Naoki Hamaguchi recently sat down with Japanese outlet Famitsu to discuss the project’s current status. The interview saw Hamaguchi reveal that he’s satisfied with where his team is at the moment, stating that work on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is going “very well.” Elaborating on this train of thought, the industry veteran confirmed that the developer is on schedule and hasn’t encountered any significant setbacks so far. Nevertheless, Hamaguchi still isn’t ready to commit to a concrete release window for the next Final Fantasy remake.

Square Enix Completed Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3’s Story in 2024

Elsewhere during the interview, Kitase reiterated that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is already story-complete. Hamaguchi already revealed as much in November 2024, when he originally said that Square Enix finalized the concept for the upcoming RPG. Reflecting on the final design document, Kitase now said he’s “very satisfied” with how everything turned out and expects that fans will be pleased with the result as well, without delving into any details.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake spent approximately five years in active development, not accounting for pre-production. In contrast, Square Enix managed to finish Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth after around four years’ worth of production. The company’s ability to reuse some of the FF7 Remake assets for FF7 Rebirth is likely the main reason why it was able to achieve a faster turnaround time with the second entry in the trilogy. Rebirth might have been done even sooner had Square Enix not had to deal with the effects of the global pandemic, which resulted in widespread project delays in 2020.

The third and final installment in the remake trilogy could hence feasibly hit the market as early as 2027. Like the first two entries, the as-of-yet-untitled game is expected to be a timed PlayStation exclusive before making its way to PC and potentially even more platforms. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth became a multi-platform game earlier today, January 23, when it debuted on PC.
