The Witcher’s Geralt VA Discusses The Witcher 3’s 10-Year Legacy

Summary

  • It might be hard to believe, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will soon be celebrating its 10-year anniversary in May.
  • Speaking to GamesRadar, Geralt’s VA discussed why the popular title has had such an enduring legacy.
  • Among other bits, he noted the game’s “immersive storytelling” as something that few games have topped since then.

When CD Projekt Red released The Witcher 3: WIld Hunt in May 2015, it was something of a revelation. At the time, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were still new (both released in 2013), and neither arguably had their “Wow” title, showcasing the potential for gaming moving forward.

The Witcher 3 did just that and then some with its two post-launch DLC expansions, Heart of Stone and Blood and Wine. As a result, The Witcher as a franchise, which had a smaller dedicated fanbase, blew up, with many taking an interest in the world, including the powers that be at Netflix. It also put CDPR on the map as a video game developer.

Flash forward to today, and the game will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary. In an interview, Doug Cockle, the voice behind Geralt, shared why exactly the game’s legacy still stands tall to this day.

The Witcher 3 Was A “Milestone”

Speaking to GamesRadar, Cockle shared just why The Witcher 3 resonated so much and became the juggernaut it did. “It was a milestone in game development for all kinds of reasons: the quality of the animation; the quality of the gameplay; the visuals; the sound design; the storytelling; the writing,” he shared. “All of it was so amazing when it first came out, and it continues to be amazing.”

Indeed, The Witcher hit all of those key benchmarks and then some, including attention to detail. In particular, though, Cockle highlighted the game’s “immersive storytelling” as the chief reason why the game still resonates to this day.

“I think there are very few games that have come out since that have approached that level of immersive storytelling that [The Witcher 3] achieved in 2015 when it first came out.”

There’s no doubt that’s a bold proclamation, specifically as several massive titles have been released since then, but it does have some validity. All of these years later, and The Witcher’s impact on gaming can be felt. More so, it remains a popular title, as evidenced by the numbers at SteamDB. In other words, maybe Geralt does have a point.
