Ubisoft reverses Steam Deck support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed will be Steam Deck certified at launch after all, reversing a recent statement which claimed that it wouldn’t meet the portable’s minimum specs.

In a Q&A published in February, Shadows’ technology director had said that, at launch, the game would “not be compatible with Steam Deck, due to the fact it is below our minimum specs for PC”.

However, in a statement published on its social media channels on Wednesday, Ubisoft confirmed that Steam Deck will now be able to run Shadows on the day it releases later this month.

“Many of you have been asking about Steam Deck.  We are happy to say that we are supporting Steam Deck at launch and are currently awaiting the level of classification from Valve,” it said.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the first major Ubisoft game to release day one on Steam since 2019. Previously, the publisher prioritised its own digital store, as well as the Epic Games Store, at launch. Late last year, the company brought Assassin’s Creed Mirage to Steam, as well as Star Wars Outlaws, after other stores.

Last month, Ubisoft said it was aware that a significant number of people had been able to obtain Assassin’s Creed Shadows nearly a month ahead of its release, and claimed that any footage being shared online was not representative of the launch game.

“We are aware players have accessed Assassin’s Creed Shadows ahead of its official release,” it said. “The development team is still working on patches to prepare the experience for launch and any footage shared online does not represent the final quality of the game.

“Leaks are unfortunate and can diminish the excitement for players. We kindly ask you not to spoil the experience for others. Thank you to our community for already taking steps to protect everyone from spoilers.

“Stay in the shadows, avoid the spoilers, and keep an eye on our channel for more official surprises in the coming weeks! March 20 will be here soon!”
