Data from Circana has revealed that sales of the PS5 in the United States are outpacing the PS4, although for Microsoft, the Xbox Series X/S is reportedly not performing a strongly as the Xbox One.
Taking into account the first 52 months on the market for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Sony’s current-generation platform surpassed the PS4’s sales pace by 7%, while Xbox Series X/S fell by 19% behind its predecessor during the same period.

Outside of specific platforms, Circana notes that console sales on the whole are currently on a bit of a downward turn, with hardware spending for February 2025 dipping by 25% compared to the previous year. This is the lowest February in regards to video game hardware spending in five years, when February 2020 recorded $184. PS5 was last month’s best-selling console in units and dollar sales, with Xbox Series X/S coming in second place.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launched in November 2020 during the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, although it has long been reported that Sony’s system has been outpacing its rival for some time now. Sony announced recently that PS5 shipments have topped 75 million worldwide following its best holiday period to date.
